Rio de Janeiro City, International Destination
The city of Rio de Janeiro (6,775,561 inhab., IBGE, 2021) is divided into about
163 neighborhoods, which belong to one of the following "zones":
Centro, Zona Norte, Zona Sul and Zona Oeste, we take a tour of the main neighborhoods of the city.
Officially, the municipality of Rio de Janeiro is divided into
nine subprefectures and 33 administrative regions.

Center
The
Centre of the city, where the Historical Center, formerly Terreiro do Paço and current Praça XV de Novembro, is located, comprises
the place where the city's urban expansion began. There are 16 districts, including Estácio, Gamboa, Lapa, Mangueira, Paquetá (island), Rio Comprido and Santa Teresa. In the zone
Central are some historic hills; Castelo hill was razed and its land used for landfill (Aterro do Flamengo).
North Zone
The
North Zone, with around 80 districts, extends to the neighboring municipalities of Baixada Fluminense and includes Ilha do Governador (where the International Airport is located).
Tijuca is one of the most traditional neighborhoods in the North Zone.
South Zone
The
Zona Sul, with 17 districts, is the region of the city where the residential districts of high purchasing power of the population are concentrated, of which Botafogo, Copacabana and
Ipanema.
West Zone
The
West zone, with 42 districts, is quite vast: Barra da Tijuca, Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Jacarepaguá, Bangu, Campo Grande , Santa Cruz and Sepetiba.
