Cinelândia - actually Praça Floriano - is the central and major public square in Rio de Janeiro. Most popular cinemas were located here in the past - hence the name Cinelândia.

Bars, Restaurants and Politics

When Rio Brazil's capital (until 1960) plenty of bars and restaurants were the meeting points of politicians, journalists and this made Cinelâ,dia to be a political hotspot in the city. Yet nowadays most political events take place in this square.
